Chapter 6 · Path of Meditation

ध्यानयोग

6.1

श्रीभगवानुवाच | अनाश्रितः कर्मफलं कार्यं कर्म करोति यः | स संन्यासी च योगी च न निरग्निर्न चाक्रियः ||६-१||

śrībhagavānuvāca . anāśritaḥ karmaphalaṃ kāryaṃ karma karoti yaḥ . sa saṃnyāsī ca yogī ca na niragnirna cākriyaḥ ||6-1||

Krishna teaches that the one who does their duty without being driven by the desire for results is both a true renouncer and a yogi, not the one who has abandoned all action or rejected the sacred fire. This person acts selflessly, focused on the task at hand, rather than seeking personal gain. They embody the essence of spiritual practice and detachment.

यं संन्यासमिति प्राहुर्योगं तं विद्धि पाण्डव | न ह्यसंन्यस्तसङ्कल्पो योगी भवति कश्चन ||६-२||

yaṃ saṃnyāsamiti prāhuryogaṃ taṃ viddhi pāṇḍava . na hyasaṃnyastasaṅkalpo yogī bhavati kaścana ||6-2||

Arjuna, what people refer to as renunciation is actually yoga, and no one can truly be a yogi without letting go of their selfish desires and preconceptions, for it's impossible to achieve a deeper connection without releasing attachment to one's own thoughts.

ārurukṣormuneryogaṃ karma kāraṇamucyate . yogārūḍhasya tasyaiva śamaḥ kāraṇamucyate ||6-3||

For a seeker like Arjuna who wants to achieve a state of yoga, taking action is the way to get there, but once they've reached that state, it's inner peace and calm that become the key to staying there.

6.4

यदा हि नेन्द्रियार्थेषु न कर्मस्वनुषज्जते | सर्वसङ्कल्पसंन्यासी योगारूढस्तदोच्यते ||६-४||

yadā hi nendriyārtheṣu na karmasvanuṣajjate . sarvasaṅkalpasaṃnyāsī yogārūḍhastadocyate ||6-4||

A person is considered to have attained a state of yoga when they're no longer attached to worldly possessions or driven by desires, and have let go of all their preconceptions and notions, rising above the need to take action for personal gain. This happens when they're not drawn to sensory pleasures or invested in the outcomes of their actions. They've transcended their ego and achieved a higher state of awareness.

6.5 · Self-mastery

उद्धरेदात्मनात्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत् | आत्मैव ह्यात्मनो बन्धुरात्मैव रिपुरात्मनः ||६-५||

They're equally unaffected by pleasure and pain, or by being honored or dishonored. Their inner self is balanced and serene in all conditions.
