arjuna uvāca . jyāyasī cetkarmaṇaste matā buddhirjanārdana . tatkiṃ karmaṇi ghore māṃ niyojayasi keśava ||3-1||

Arjuna asked, if you believe knowledge is more important than action, Krishna, then why are you urging me to take part in this brutal battle, Kesava?

śrībhagavānuvāca . loke.asmina dvividhā niṣṭhā purā proktā mayānagha . jñānayogena sāṅkhyānāṃ karmayogena yoginām ||3-3||

Krishna explains that there are two main approaches to spiritual growth in this world, which he's mentioned before: one is the path of knowledge and self-awareness, followed by the Sankhyas, and the other is the path of action and service, followed by the Yogins.

na karmaṇāmanārambhānnaiṣkarmyaṃ puruṣo.aśnute . na ca saṃnyasanādeva siddhiṃ samadhigacchati ||3-4||

Simply giving up activities won't lead to a state of inactivity, and renouncing the world alone won't bring spiritual fulfillment, Krishna tells Arjuna. A person can't achieve inner peace just by stopping all actions, nor can they reach true perfection by merely abandoning their duties.

3.5

na hi kaścitkṣaṇamapi jātu tiṣṭhatyakarmakṛt . kāryate hyavaśaḥ karma sarvaḥ prakṛtijairguṇaiḥ ||3-5||

No one can remain inactive, not even for a moment, because nature's inherent qualities drive everyone to act, whether they want to or not. Everyone is compelled to do something, as the forces of nature are always at work. This is an unavoidable part of life, and it's impossible to remain completely still or inactive.

karmendriyāṇi saṃyamya ya āste manasā smaran . indriyārthānvimūḍhātmā mithyācāraḥ sa ucyate ||3-6||

One who controls their actions but mentally indulges in sensual desires is considered a pretender, deceived by their own confused thinking. They may appear to be in control, but their mind is still attached to worldly pleasures. This kind of behavior is seen as hypocritical.

yastvindriyāṇi manasā niyamyārabhate.arjuna . karmendriyaiḥ karmayogamasaktaḥ sa viśiṣyate ||3-7||

Arjuna, when someone uses their mind to control their senses and then engages in selfless service with their active faculties, they stand out as exceptional, for they've begun to embody the path of karma yoga, free from attachment.

niyataṃ kuru karma tvaṃ karma jyāyo hyakarmaṇaḥ . śarīrayātrāpi ca te na prasiddhyedakarmaṇaḥ ||3-8||

Do your duty, as it's a necessary part of life, because taking action is better than not acting at all, and even basic bodily needs can't be met without some level of activity.

yajñārthātkarmaṇo.anyatra loko.ayaṃ karmabandhanaḥ . tadarthaṃ karma kaunteya muktasaṅgaḥ samācara ||3-9||

The world is trapped in a cycle of action and reaction, but actions done as an offering can set us free. So, Arjuna, perform your actions without attachment, and offer them as a sacrifice. This way, you'll be liberated from the binding effects of your actions.

The gods will provide you with the things you desire when they are nourished by your sacrifices. However, if you accept their gifts without giving anything back, you're essentially taking something that doesn't belong to you, which makes you a thief.

karma brahmodbhavaṃ viddhi brahmākṣarasamudbhavam . tasmātsarvagataṃ brahma nityaṃ yajñe pratiṣṭhitam ||3-15||

Action originates from the ultimate reality, Brahman, which in turn emerges from the eternal and unchanging essence. This all-encompassing reality is always present in the act of sacrifice, which is the foundation of everything. Brahman is the source of all action and is perpetually established in sacrificial rituals.

evaṃ pravartitaṃ cakraṃ nānuvartayatīha yaḥ . aghāyurindriyārāmo moghaṃ pārtha sa jīvati ||3-16||

Anyone who doesn't participate in this cycle of sacrifice and instead indulges in a life of sin, driven by their senses, lives a meaningless life, Partha. They exist without a higher purpose, trapped in their own desires. Krishna teaches Arjuna that such a life is empty and unfulfilling.

If Krishna didn't perform his duties, the entire universe would fall into chaos, and he would be responsible for disrupting the social order and causing harm to all living beings, leading to their downfall. Without his actions, the world would be thrown into confusion and destruction would ensue. The balance of the world relies on Krishna's actions, and his inaction would have severe consequences.

One who truly understands the nature of things, Arjuna, recognizes that the forces of nature are constantly interacting with each other, and knowing this, they don't get caught up in the process. They see that the forces are simply playing out their roles, and so they remain unattached. This understanding frees them from getting entangled in the web of actions and reactions.

The wise should not disturb the minds of the unenlightened.
